2026 By-Election

Métis-sur-Mer will hold a by-election on Sunday, March 15, 2026. The position of Municipal Councillor, Seat Number 2, is up for election.

This vote will allow residents to fill the vacant seat on the municipal council for the next four years. It is a key moment in local democratic life, where every vote counts in shaping the future of our municipality.

Here are some important dates during the election period:

  • Nomination period: February 2 to 13
  • Period to register or update the electoral list: February 2 to 26
  • Mailing of mail-in ballots: Monday, March 2
  • Advance voting day: Sunday, March 8, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Deadline to receive mail-in ballots at the municipal office: Friday, March 13, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.
  • Election day: Sunday, March 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I WANT TO RUN AS A CANDIDATE

Any person who is eligible to be registered on the electoral list and who resides within the territory of the municipality, whether continuously or not, may run for the position of councillor.

Candidate nomination forms are available at City Hall.

All nomination papers must be submitted to Myriam Coulombe, Election Officer. The nomination period runs from February 2 to 13, 2026, on the following days and times:

  • Monday to Thursday: between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • On Friday, February 13, the municipal office will be open continuously from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

JE VEUX M’INSCRIRE SUR LA LISTE ÉLECTORALE

  • My main residence is in Métis-sur-Mer (resident voter)

If you voted to the Métis-sur-Mer municipal elections in fall 2025, you are already registered on the electoral list.

To confirm whether you are registered, you may contact Élections Québec: https://www.electionsquebec.qc.ca/nous-joindre/

If you wish to register or update your information on the electoral list, please visit the municipal office between February 2 and February 23, 2026, to complete the appropriate form.

 A parent, your spouse, or a person living with you may submit a registration or modification request on your behalf.

  • My main residence is outside Métis-sur-Mer (non-resident voter)

A non-resident voter who owns property located within the municipality must complete and submit a signed written request to the Town asking that their name be added to the electoral list.

Even if you submitted a registration request and a mail-in voting request during the fall 2025 elections, you must complete a new registration form and a new mail-in voting application form (as required under the Loi sur les élections et les référendums): Application for registration on the list of electors and to vote by mail

When more than one non-resident owns a property located within the municipality, a proxy form must be signed by all co-owners authorizing a single person to vote for that address: Power of attorney for registration on the list of electors and application to vote by mail

The Town must receive the completed and signed proxy form no later than February 26, 2026.

 

I WANT TO VOTE BY MAIL

Section 2 of the Act respecting elections and referendums states that mail-in voting is valid for one election only.

Even if you applied for mail-in voting during the fall 2025 elections, you must complete a new mail-in voting application form.

Return the appropriate form, duly completed and signed, to the Election Officer: mcoulombe@municipalitesam.ca

Deadline to register by submitting the non-resident registration form: February 26, 2026

Deadline for the Municipality to receive your mail-in ballot: Friday, March 13, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.
